Warranties and Returns: What They Actually Cover

Warranty terms are among the least read parts of a purchase and among the more useful, because they determine what happens when something fails and what evidence you will need.

Three Different Things

A return right, which lets you send something back because you changed your mind, generally within a set window and in original condition.

A statutory right, which exists under consumer law in most jurisdictions and covers goods that are faulty, not as described, or not fit for purpose. This applies regardless of what any warranty says.

A manufacturer’s warranty, which is an additional promise from the maker, usually covering defects for a stated period.

These operate independently, and a manufacturer’s warranty cannot remove statutory rights, though many people assume it can.

The Unauthorised Seller Point

This catches people out regularly. Many manufacturers only honour warranties on units bought from themselves or from listed authorised sellers.

Buying the same product from a third-party marketplace listing at a lower price can mean no warranty support at all, which is worth knowing before choosing on price alone. Manufacturers generally state where authorised purchases can be made, and checking an official listing such as the veken official website before buying elsewhere is a reasonable precaution for anything you expect to keep for years.

What Warranties Usually Exclude

  • Normal wear on consumable parts: filters, seals, adhesive pads
  • Damage from misuse, including running a pump dry
  • Damage from limescale where descaling was specified and not done
  • Anything modified or repaired by someone else
  • Purchases from unauthorised sellers, which is a common exclusion

What to Keep

Proof of purchase with a date, which is the one thing every claim requires. A photograph of the receipt is sufficient and does not fade.

Also worth keeping: the model number, the packaging until the return window has passed, and any registration confirmation where the manufacturer offers it.

Registering the Product

Some warranties require registration within a set period and are void without it. Others simply offer it.

Reading the terms once, at the point of purchase, tells you which applies. It is a five-minute task that occasionally saves an entire claim.

Making a Claim

Contact the seller first for anything within the return or statutory period, and the manufacturer for a warranty claim outside it.

Describe the fault factually, include photographs, and state what you are asking for. Claims phrased as a clear factual account with evidence resolve considerably faster than ones phrased as a complaint.

Consumables Are Not Faults

A filter that needs replacing after a month is working as designed, not failing. The same applies to adhesive pads and rubber washers.

Understanding which parts are consumable before buying prevents both a frustrating claim and the disappointment of discovering an ongoing cost that was not obvious.
